RIFTMAS

December 24–31

Community • Courage • Found Family

"May your light hold and your circle stay close."

What is Riftmas?

Riftmas is a Stranger Things-inspired year-end holiday that runs from December 24-31. It's built around the themes that matter most: community, courage, and found family.

We mark safe spaces with light, check in on people who might be struggling, and celebrate the bonds that hold us together through the dark times.

This isn't about replacing other holidays—it's about creating intentional space for connection and gratitude during the week between Christmas and New Year's.

Merry Riftmas. Light hold. Circle close.

Core Symbols

💡

The Riftlight

A string of multicolored bulbs that marks a safe space. Hang one in your main window or doorway to signal you're part of the circle. Two crossed Riftlights mean open house/welcome.

🪢

The Sigil Knot

A woven knot ornament representing the bonds that hold reality together. Each strand represents a bond: friend, family, neighbor, community, self. Tie them together and hang somewhere visible.

🔻

The Upside Ornament

A tree decoration hung inverted to acknowledge the other side. One ornament for remembrance and awareness. Two means "please check in" (only if your circle agrees on that meaning).

Traditions & Rituals

Light the Gate (Dec 24, dusk)

Hang a Riftlight across your main window or doorway. Read a short story of courage (one page is enough). Text one person: "Light hold?"

Waffle Offering

Put waffles on the table before the main meal as a playful guardian nod (inspired by Stranger Things' Eleven and Eggos). Keep it light, not precious. Share them afterward.

Redacted Gift Swap

Wrap gifts in brown paper with one stamped sigil only. Recipients guess the giver with one question each. Keep gifts small, thoughtful, and personal.

The Quiet Plate (Optional)

Set aside a small plate of food for drop-offs to someone who's alone, sick, broke, grieving, or overloaded.

The Watch (Dec 26-28)

Three days where you check in on people and leave small tokens at doorways.

  • Tokens stay small and practical
  • Add one sentence about what they did that mattered
  • No guilt gifts. Gratitude only

The Vigil Walk (Dec 29)

20-40 minutes with lanterns or flashlights. Stop at marked houses (Riftlight visible). Exchange small charms with one sentence:

  • "This is for your courage."
  • "This is for your patience."
  • "This is for your help."

Remembrance Wall

A public board where people pin notes for those lost, or those who helped. Prompt cards:

  • "This year, you saved me by…"
  • "I'm still here because…"
  • "I'm carrying you into the light."

Gatekeeper (Co-op Scavenger Hunt)

Goal: "seal" a mock gate by completing four trials together.

  • Signal Trial: Find a hidden note with a channel number + clue
  • Light Trial: Match bulb colors to locations
  • Knot Trial: Tie a simple knot from a diagram
  • Courage Trial: Each person shares a 10-second "hard thing I did" moment

Shadow Stories (Story Circle)

Rule: one line each, and you must include one of: a light, a door, a signal, or a choice.

Optional twist: One person plays "The Static" and can interrupt once per round with a prompt like "the lights flicker," "the map changes," or "someone lies."

Hosting Roles

One person can hold multiple roles. Two people can share one role.

Gatekeeper

Builds the scavenger hunt and runs "The Seal" game on Dec 30.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real religion thing? +
No. It's a themed holiday tradition. Treat it like a community ritual with good boundaries.
Do I need to be a Stranger Things superfan? +
No. The vibe is "light in the dark" and "found family." That's the point. The Stranger Things inspiration is just aesthetic.
What if someone hates holidays? +
Riftmas works best as an opt-in check-in season. No pressure. The whole point is checking in on people, not making them uncomfortable.
How much should gifts cost? +
Keep it small. Thought beats price every time. A handmade token or a meaningful small item is perfect.
What's the one non-negotiable? +
Check in on people. That's the whole holiday. Everything else is flexible.
